Companies Set to Benefit

The Data Center Construction Boom

The United States is currently experiencing a massive data center construction boom.

According to the latest US Data Center Map, updated in August 2026, there are currently 3,359 operating data centers in the United States, with another 1,420 under construction or in the planning stage.

Depending on how they are counted, some estimates put the number of planned or under-construction data centers at around 3,000.

AI is expanding at an incredible pace, isn’t it?

AI learns from enormous amounts of data and must perform vast numbers of calculations in the process.

Those calculations require large numbers of high-performance GPUs, which is one reason data centers are becoming so enormous.

They Built the Data Centers — But Can They Actually Use Them?

Data center construction is booming, but there is a problem.

According to one forecast, nearly 40% of data center projects scheduled to become operational in 2026 are expected to be delayed.

In other words, even after the buildings are constructed, many of them cannot begin operating as quickly as originally planned.

This has become a major issue in the United States — serious enough that President Trump has declared a national emergency related to the security of the country’s power system.

So why are these projects being delayed?

One of the biggest reasons is electricity.

Electricity must be transmitted over long distances at very high voltage.

Power generated at a power plant is therefore stepped up to a high voltage for transmission. Then, near the data center, substations and transformers reduce the voltage to levels that the facility can actually use.

As you can see from this photo, a massive data center requires massive electrical infrastructure right next to it.

The data center is behind it.

The problem is that transmission-grid capacity and the supply of transformers are not keeping up with demand.

The United States has roughly 3,000 electric utilities, and equipment specifications vary widely across the industry. This makes standardization and mass production of electrical equipment more difficult.

According to the U.S. Department of Energy, there are an astonishing more than 80,000 different distribution-transformer specifications in the United States.

On top of that, the United States has relied heavily on overseas manufacturing for critical electrical equipment such as transformers.

As a result, the power grid — one of the country’s most important pieces of infrastructure — has become a matter of national concern.

President Trump declared a national emergency, identifying vulnerabilities in the bulk-power system and dependence on foreign-made critical equipment as significant national-security risks.

In other words, this is not simply a problem for data center operators.

It is a major issue for society as a whole.

Now, after reading this far, those of us watching from Japan can probably see where the opportunity lies, can’t we?

Companies that solve major problems facing society can grow dramatically.

If you are a regular reader of the All Geniuses Association blog, I’m sure you already know where I’m going with this.(笑)

At the All Geniuses Association’s Asset Rich Club, we share this kind of perspective — ways of looking at the world and thinking about where opportunities may emerge.

And of course, inside the club we share information that is even more current than what you read here on the blog.

I’m still “growing” myself, too.

But when I look at the world from this perspective, I realize that opportunities really are everywhere.
